| Hannah - Hannah came to us [Animal Trustees of Austin] in a cardboard box as a three month old emaciated puppy that had been shot in the leg. She had a horrible bone infection and was lifeless. UPDATE March 30, 2006 - I just got Hannah home today and she's already made a big impression on me! She's a sweet, intelligent girl, very playful, loves balls and squeaky toys - she would be a joy to train. Her previous foster mom has a cat. She said she's been in the same room, hasn't had physical contact with the kitty, but is extremely interested. She hasn't seen any signs that Hannah would be aggressive toward a cat; however, they would need proper introduction and supervision. On the leg - poor baby! - she does not seem to have emotional trauma from her ordeal, but her front leg will not be normal. She is out of her cast and healing nicely, but the leg is much atrophied. She needs another month of semi-restricted activity. She is putting weight on the leg, but walks with a pronounced limp which should improve over time as that leg builds muscle, but won't go completely away. The pellet is buried in the bone and the doctor did not want to risk further bone infection by removing it; however, he doesn't anticipate that causing her future problems. She had an infection in the bone as it was, and both ends of the break had died - so the bone won't grow back together. As a result, she has two permanent pins in the leg bridging the gap and her leg has a slightly bent appearance. Having said all of that - none of it seems to really bother Hannah. She's a happy, energetic girl and is going to make someone a great pet. |
